Major Writing #1 Response

        This assignment asks me to conduct an interview with an individual that participates in writing activities in their professional life, preferably someone in my field of interest: biology. I will ask questions regarding how they utilize rhetoric in their professional life, how much they write, and how they use their writing structure to communicate with their intended audience. I will also ask if they can provide with examples of what genre of writing they use for publishers, other researchers, students, and their research team. After the interview, I will find a website appropriate for my field of interest so that I may see how biologists share ideas in the formal academic manner and in a non-academic manner.

         I will write the paper like I do for a research paper. I will state how my interviewee writes and give evidence that support my claim. My evidence will also include quotations from written material and descriptions of how and why my interviewee writes in such a manner. I should be mindful to not make my paper sound like an argumentative piece, but rather a piece stating an observation. I have three questions regarding this assignment: can I interview a someone I know and work with? If it becomes necessary, can I conduct a second interview with another person? Are we solely describing the genre our interviewee writes in or can we have some example texts from their research papers?

This question is important because we will need to double our food production by 2050 as the global population increases. GMO food and crops are a potential answer to this problem for their high nutrient content, longer shelf life, and resistance against pests and droughts. 2. Study on University of Iowa Students’ Opinion on GMOs Hunter Brown University of Iowa Abstract Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are any organism – plant, animal, bacteria – that has a modified genome and may be the answer to help answer the food production problem in the world.   As GMOs become more mainstream in the food supply, many people are questioning if GMOs are truly safe to eat.   This study gauged what University of Iowa students think about GMOs and what research should be done to ensure the safety of GMOs. Additionally, two interviews with a professor of genetics and a produce expert were conducted to discuss the literature of GMOs. We found that most students are not picky when buying groceries, pro-GMO, but they are worried about the long-term effects of a majority GMO diet.
